FUNDING GUIDELINES

While our grants do not have geographic restrictions, we do have a focus on the Western United States, including Colorado, California, and Oregon. Most awarded grants are in the amount of $10,000 or less. Larger and multi-year awards may also be considered.

The Todd W. Hoffman Foundation supports organizations and programs making a significant impact in the areas of:

Health

Including medical equipment and improved access to services.

Education

Including mentorship, tutoring programs and scholarships.

Environment

Including regional, national and international environmental preservation initiatives.

Civil Liberties

Including human rights, civil rights, and free speech organizations.

Across all focus areas, we seek applications for programs and projects that demonstrate:

  • A clear need
  • Consistent, measurable outcomes
  • Opportunity for broad and/or immediate impact, either locally or on a larger scale
  • Effective leadership
  • Cost-effectiveness and skilled fiscal management

We are unlikely to fund the following:

  • Individuals
  • Galas, fundraising events, or sponsorships
  • Direct mail campaigns
  • Debt relief and endowment
  • Colleges and universities
  • Religious institutions and programs significantly shaped by religious affiliation 
  • General operating requests

Application Process

Applications should be accompanied by the following attachments:

  • A general operating budget for the current fiscal year.
  • End-of-year financial statements from the most recent fiscal year.
  • A list of your current Board of Directors and their affiliations.
  • Up to three pages of additional attachments that are essential to helping reviewers better understand your organization and project.

Proposals are accepted on May 15. If the deadline falls on a weekend, requests will be due the following weekday.

For example, if the deadline is on a Saturday, requests will be due the following Monday.

It is not a requirement to contact us before applying, though we do enjoy getting to know our grantees and potential partners.

No, we only accept proposals for specific programs, projects, or initiatives. This includes capital projects.

We prefer not to fund general staff positions or administration costs and strongly prioritize funding for direct project expenses.

 A majority of our grants fall within the $5,000 to $10,000 range. However, we do occasionally approve grants for higher amounts if there is a great need and/or if the project strongly aligns with our focus. We recommend reaching out before applying if you plan to request more than $10,000.

We are unable to accommodate this request. Our staffing levels do not allow for this. Also, reviewing some proposal drafts and not others would create an uneven playing field for applicants.

No, we fund both large and small organizations. However, we do prioritize projects where our dollars can make the largest impact.

An organization may apply once every 12 months. For example, if you apply at our May deadline, you are eligible to apply again the following May.

No, you may submit only one application during a 12-month time period.

It is not advisable to submit the same project unless new circumstances have made the project more competitive or better aligned with our focus areas.
